SMOKING, YOUR HEALTH AND E-CIGARETTES

Smoking is a huge risk to your well-being and your health. It is the biggest cause of death and illness in the UK.

It can cause cancer and leave you at risk from other conditions such as heart disease and stroke, as well as damage to your lungs.

ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) have a range of fact sheets outlining topics such as smoking and disease and smoking statistics.

They point out that despite nicotine being the addictive element of a cigarette, it is in fact the tobacco that is the harmful. This is because tobacco contains tar and other toxins. Tar is the sticky brown substance in tobacco. It can stain your teeth and your fingers yellow and it contains chemicals and radio active compounds that can cause cancer.

E- Cigarettes don’t contain tobacco.

In a series of surveys conducted by ASH, it was found that there are currently 2.6 million adults using electronic cigarettes to either keep them from smoking too much tobacco or to help them give up altogether.

They also found that most people use re-chargeable electronic cigarettes with replaceable pre-filled cartridges and that the most popular juices contained nicotine and were tobacco flavoured, followed by fruit and then menthol.

There aren’t enough studies to confirm whether or not e-cigarettes can help smokers to stop once and for all. However, new evidence from the Public Health Evidence Review states that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than tobacco. That’s got to be a good reason for switching from normal cigarettes to electronic cigarettes. In fact, from 2016 e-cigarettes will be available on prescription as part of the campaign to help people quit smoking. Read this article from the Daily Mirror here.
